Aromatherapy Awareness Week

This week is Aromatherapy Awareness Week, and as many of you know we love working with essential oils as not only do they exude fabulous aromas but they all have their own unique aromatheraputic properties.

In this blog post we wanted to share with you just some of the essential oils we have selected to fragrance our products with; but first a little bit about aromatherapy.

“The therapeutic benefits of essential oils have been known since ancient times and have been successfully used by medical practitioners in other European countries since the early 20th Century”

In a nutshell aromatherapy according to The National Association for holistic Aromatherapy  ‘Aromatherapy can be defined as ‘the art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit. It is an art and science which seeks to explore the physiological, psychological and spiritual realm of the individual's response to aromatic extracts…’

Now for the science bit! Aromatherapy works on many different levels but we will focus on smell - naturally! Our sense of smell is 10,000 times  more powerful than any other sense and smell is also thought to have one of strongest links to the subconscious mind .

As you breathe in the aromas of the essential oils, they can trigger the olfactory system (the part of your brain connected to smell) and as the molecules waft up your nose -  into your brain - they affect the limbic system which plays a role in your emotions, heart rate, stress and hormone balance.  It is here that they are processed and release the chemicals that revive you or help you to relax - depending on the essential oil.

What’s not to love?

So what goes into flo…

Below are just a few of the amazing oils we love working with to lovingly create our products:

Bergamot essential oil is extracted from the rind of the bergamot orange fruit.  It is  citrusy but sweet-smelling and it has powerful mood-stabilising effects.  It helps promote clarity in the workplace. You can find bergamot in our happinessrelax and uplifting collection.

Clary Sage is a herb with a scent that has some similarities to lavender, but with an earthy, smoky note.  The essential oil has a calming, relaxing effect and can also bring about a sense of euphoria, clary sage can be found in our embrace uplifting and serenity collection.

Lavender is one of the most well-known and versatile essential oils.  It has a floral, woody fragrance and can be both stimulating and calming.  Lavender has reviving qualities but can also help induce restful sleep.  It has the ability to reduce anxiety and emotional stress and to improve mood. You'll find lavender in our relax and embrace and serenity blends

Lemongrass, a versatile essential oil, known amongst aromatherapists to be soothing, stimulating and refreshing, it has the ability to both calm and revitalize, to relieve tension and invigorate. Lemongrass can be found adding some zing into our zest collection

Ylang Ylang essential oil has a sweet intoxicating aroma that is totally unique.  It is calming and relaxing but also has an uplifting effect on mood. Ylang ylang can be found in both our happiness and embrace collections.

We would love to hear about how you enjoy and benefit from aromatherapy, so please add comments and help waft the word about how amazing essential oils truly are!
